Walk-In Chiller Installation in Kimana
The new walk-in chiller measures 8.3 metres long, 2.2 metres wide, and 2.4 metres high. We designed the facility to provide controlled-temperature storage for fresh vegetables and horticultural produce.
The cold room operates at a set temperature of 4°C. This provides the required refrigerated environment for the intended produce.
Our team constructed the cold room using 100mm EPS (polystyrene) interlocking panels. These insulated panels help maintain a stable internal temperature. They also reduce the effect of external temperatures on the refrigeration system.
Refrigeration System Installed
The walk-in chiller uses a 4.2 HP condensing unit with R404 refrigerant. We paired the condensing unit with a matching DD40 evaporator.
The system provides the cooling capacity required for the size and application of the cold room.
We also installed a fully fitted three-phase control panel. The panel controls the refrigeration system and supports safe and reliable operation.
The cold room features an airtight door measuring 1,800mm × 900mm. We also fitted PVC strip curtains at the entrance.
The curtains help reduce cold air loss when workers enter or leave the cold room. They also help the refrigeration system maintain the required temperature.
Why Kimana Was Chosen for the Cold Room
The location of the cold room played an important role in the project.
The facility sits at Kimana CIDC in Kimana Town. Its central location makes it easier for farmers and businesses within the constituency to access cold storage.
Local farmers can store their horticultural produce closer to their farms. This can help reduce exposure to high temperatures after harvesting.

Challenges During the Cold Room Installation
Our installation team faced several challenges during the project. However, careful planning helped us complete the work successfully.
1. Extending Electrical Power to the Cold Room
The site already had electricity. However, the exact location selected for the cold room did not have a direct power connection.
Our team therefore had to extend the electrical supply by approximately 70 metres.
This required additional electrical work before we could commission the refrigeration system.
2. Three-Phase Power Connection
The site had a three-phase power supply. However, the electrical consumer box did not have the three-phase supply properly terminated.
Our refrigeration system requires three-phase power. Therefore, our team had to ensure that the cold room received the correct three-phase electrical connection.
We completed the necessary electrical work before testing and commissioning the system.
3. Transporting Equipment from Nairobi
Kimana lies approximately 230 kilometres from Nairobi. This distance made project logistics an important part of the installation.
Our team planned the project carefully before travelling to the site. We transported the required refrigeration equipment, panels, electrical accessories, tools, and other materials together.
This approach helped us avoid unnecessary trips between Nairobi and Kimana. It also allowed the installation team to maintain the project schedule.
Five-Day Cold Room Installation Project
Our team completed the project in five days from the date of arrival on site.
The installation involved several important stages:
- We assembled the 100mm EPS insulated panels.
- We installed the cold room door and PVC strip curtains.
- We installed the 4.2 HP condensing unit.
- We mounted the DD40 evaporator.
- We installed the electrical control panel.
- We completed the refrigeration and electrical connections.
- We tested the complete refrigeration system.
- We commissioned the cold room and checked its temperature.
After testing, the cold room successfully reached its required 4°C set temperature.
The facility is now fully operational and ready to support the storage of locally produced horticultural produce and vegetables.
